polishing furniture

introduction

Want to spruce up that gorgeous old piece of furniture that you inherited from grandma? Hardwareshop shows you how with this step by step guide. Pretty soon you'll be polishing like a demon!

what you'll need
  • Good quality furniture wax
  • 400mm x 400mm cotton rag
  • A little water
  • A clean rag for final polishing
  • Some elbow grease

step 1: making the polishing wad
  • Get the cotton rag and fold it according to the steps shown.
step 2: final fold of the polishing wad
  • Fold the wad in the manner displayed in the photo to the right and you're ready to polish.
step 3: first coat of wax
  • After making sure that the surface you are polishing is feree of dust and dirt.
  • Apply the wax to the wad and apply to the surface in 150mm circles - just like you would if you were polishing your car.
  • Continue this process in small patches across the total arae of the pice you need tp polish.
  • Add a tiny spray of water from time to time to the wad to make the job a little easier.
step 4: the final polish
  • You're almost there!
  • After the wax has dried to a soft haze, start to buff in circular motion with the clean rag across the piece.
  • Make sure that you shake the clean rag every so often so that you don't rub too much wax into the piece. Repeat as required.
  • To make sure that the wax has time to dry, do not apply more than 2 coats of wax every couple of days.
